Kenya’s very own World Male Athlete of the Year Eliud Kipchoge has today received a honorary Doctor of Science degree from Laikipia University during the institution’s seventh graduation Ceremony. Today’s event took place at the university’s main campus where more than 2000 students were awarded diplomas and had degrees conferred in various fields of study.
Taking to twitter shortly after the ceremony, Mr. Kipchoge thanked the university for recognizing his efforts in the world of sports and for deeming it fit to confer him the honor.
“Today I was awarded the Honorary Degree of Science from Laikipia University. I thank the university fraternity for this auspicious award. Thank you,” tweeted Kipchoge.
In a statement, the University asserted that the award was meant to appreciate Kipchoge’s impactful contribution in world sports.
“Pursuant of Laikipia University Charter, 2013 Section III, (21) (4) (k) on the conferment of honorary degrees and upon recommendation of the university senate and approval therefore by the Laikipia University council, the university has the pleasure of to present Mr Eliud Kipchoge to Kenyans and the international community for the award of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) during the 7th graduation ceremony,” read part of the statement.
During the Mashujaa day celebrations in October, Kipchoge was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (EGH) by President Uhuru Kenyatta. It is worth noting that EGH is the highest honor that can be awarded to a civilian in Kenya.
Kipchoge’s fortunes recently started knocking when he became the first human ever to run a 42-kilometre marathon race in under two hours at Vienna in Austria during the INEOS challenge dubbed as proof that no human is limited.
