How to write a CV (Curriculum Vitae)

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) which means  ”course of life” in Latin is a brief account of a person’s personal information, education background, qualifications and his/her occupations mostly sent with a job application or sent by job seekers. The purpose of a CV is to show that you are qualified for a specific job for which you are applying.

These are the steps on how to write a perfect CV:

1.Personal Information/details 

This includes your name, date of birth, gender, marital status, Identification number, nationality and languages . For example:

DATE OF BIRTH :23/04/1995
GENDER : Male
MARITAL STATUS : Single
ID NO : 3031880
NATIONALITY : Kenyan
LANGUAGES : English, Kiswahili, French

2.Career Objectives

A good CV should contain a career objective to show them you are fit for the job vacancy they are offering you. Research on the company needs, what skill do they require from you. For example:

CAREER OBJECTIVES
Ready to establish professional working in the field of growth and profit making towards company development

3.Educational Background

This show what you’ve done education wise. For example:

EDUCATION BACKGROUND
Sep 2014 to date : Moi University of science and Technology. Degree in Information Technology
Feb 2009-November 2012 : Karen secondary school. Attained a mean grade of B-(minus) 58 points.
Jan2000-November : Marion primary school.

4.Qualifications

This shows what you’ve achieved these can be the job you currently have or achievements made in your life. Include the dates that you began and ended everything. For example:

QUALIFICATIONS
2008: Kenya National Examination Council Certificate verifying my primary course
2014: Kenya National Examination Council Certificate verifying my secondary

2014: A letter from the ministry of education MOI University verifying my graduation to higher education.

5: Work Experience

These are jobs that you hold currently or that you’ve held in the past. For example:

WORK EXPERIENCE
Jan-Apr 2013: Taught Mathematics and science at Membly academy-Nakuru County. Left on education ground.
Jan-Aug 2014: Taught Computer studies at Star High school currently St. Gabriel High school-Nairobi county.
March 2014-April 2015: Worked for mobile web company under T4D which involved online article writing. Left on financial affairs.

6.Personal Interests

Distinctive interests or hobbies will make you stand out. Try to hobbies that depict you positively. For example:

PERSONAL INTERESTS
1. Playing football
2. Writing
3. Socializing

7.Referees

This are lists of people you have worked with in the past and that have seen your work and can support that they’ve worked with you.Its best if you talk to your references before listing them. Write down all their details which includes their names, addresses ,emails and numbers.
