Today marks exactly 26 years since the legendary doyen of Kenyan opposition politics, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga departed from the face of the earth. His son, ODM leader Raila Odinga has taken to social media to pen a hearty tribute of his late father, describing him as a selfless patriot. In a Facebook post seen by howto, Raila asserts that his father’s progressive efforts will never be erased from the memories of Kenyans.
“On this day 26 years ago you took a journey from our beloved country never to return. But your patriotic and selfless actions remain engraved in the hearts of the men and women who knew you and in the collective memory of the nation you helped build. Your memory remains a permanent presence in your absence”, reads the amiable post.
Jaramogi was the face of Kenyan opposition in independent Kenya after breaking ranks with the founding father of the nation, President Jomo Kenyatta. He remained a fierce critic of the government for the better part of his political life, efforts that saw him endure series of state harassment moves including unlawful detention and house arrests.
The senior Odinga died on January 20th,1994 in Nairobi at the age of 82 years.
