13 dead, scores injured in Awasi Road accident

The accident happened with 36 onboard in the 41 passengers capacity bus.

Response to treatment is slow at Kisumu Referral hospital as 14 casualties are yet to be properly attended since doctors are few.

Out of the 38 passengers, 9 to 10 cannot be accounted for but reports indicate that they might have gone for medical attention at a private hospital.

So far 6 male and 5 female passengers plus bus driver and truck driver succumbed.

A 6-year-old boy and 3 others are in a critical condition in the hospital fighting for his life, however, they are closely monitored by the nurses and clinical officers available.

No public doctors available, Kisumu referral seeking services of private doctors in the region.

Awasi Accident

Kisumu County commissioner has confirmed 13 passengers are dead while 38 others have been rushed to a nearby hospital after a bus and trailer collided at 1:30 am in Awasi, Kisumu County.

The Kenya Red Cross has already arrived at the scene and are calling for blood donations.

The collision involved an Eldoret Express bus from Kisumu and a truck at Pala area along the Kisumu-Kericho highway.

Witnesses at the scene have indicated that the bus had tried to overtake the truck leading to the collision.

Early regional traffic commander had conducted blackspot awareness to motorists plying the route since there are two known designated blackspots in the area.

The fatal accident comes in at a time of great concern as medical officers are currently on strike at Kisumu Referral hospital.
